Before I start giving you my take on what to wear with leather leggings, I have to give props to one of my very favorite bloggers, Jess, for beginning my leather leggings obsession. If you haven’t seen it, and you want even more inspiration, check out her leather leggings “capsule wardrobe remix” post.
I’d like to start a similar series, where I style a seemingly tricky piece into a few different outfits to show you just how versatile it can be. Please let me know if you have any ideas for the series – is there anything in your closet that you just can’t figure out how to get a lot of wear out of? I’d love to take on the challenge!
Today, I’ll be sharing four different outfits that I’ve created, showing you how to style leather pants – which can often seem like a very edgy and intimidating piece (do leather pants make anyone else think of this incredible scene?). My style is neither edgy or intimidating, as obviously I like to stick to the classics. Who knew that leather leggings could fit into that category?
First, the Perfect Leather Leggings!
If you don’t already own a pair of leather leggings, this is the trickiest part of the process – finding a pair that fit well, aren’t too shiny, and that flatter your legs. Plus, a pair that isn’t astronomically expensive! I found my ideal pair of faux leather leggings at Loft, which has been rolling out some especially gorgeous pieces this season (currently very in love with this skirt, this cozy-looking cardi, and how ridiculously gorgeous are these block heels and these loafers? Step aside, Gucci.).
I love these leggings because they’re nice and thick, they don’t look cheap or shiny, and best of all, they have a nice little zipper on the back which is really flattering and makes them easy to get into. Basically, I think they’re perfect, and at one point this was cause for distress – because I didn’t want to spend $70 on them even though I was in love when I tried them on.
Another helpful tip for you: If you find a piece that you love but can’t justify, go home and find the piece on the store’s website. I bookmarked the leggings so that I could check back often to see if they were on sale, and I also signed up for store emails so that I would be sure not to miss any sales or offers.
What do ya know, but just three days after I miserably walked out of the store without these, I got an email from Loft that they were having a storewide 40% off sale! I scored the perfect leggings for $40, and I even ordered them for in-store pickup so that I could swing by and pick them up on my way home from work…and yes, I wore them the next day.
ONE // At the Office
Crisp White Collar & a Polished Blazer
Whether or not you can wear leather pants to work will depend upon your office environment, so use your best judgment as to whether they’re appropriate for your workplace. Since I work at an ad agency, things are pretty casual, and I think this outfit would be appropriate for even more business casual offices, as long as you make sure your shirt is long enough to cover your tush!
Here, I paired the leggings with one of my favorite tops to wear with leather pants: the classic, crisp white button-down. If you don’t have one, it’s seriously one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your closet, since you can dress it up or down and the color goes with everything.
To add some professional polish, I topped the button-down with my favorite little pale pink blazer. Another colored blazer would work too, even a classic black option. I’m on the hunt for a pretty camel blazer to add to my collection, too. My favorite, most comfy flats ever complete the look – I wear these with everything, and I have them in nude too! Best ballet flats ever.
TWO // Cozy at Brunch
Chic Loafers & a Camel Wrap
Could this look BE any more cozy?! This camel wrap makes me so happy because it’s essentially a blanket. I love going out for breakfast and sitting outside when it’s crisp and chilly in the fall, so these warm layers are essential.
Throw on a cozy turtleneck sweater and a wrap or big blanket scarf, and you’ll feel like you’re wearing your warmest jammies. The look is elevated by the leather pants, which are a more stylish alternative to normal leggings (although if you need some new leggings, these are my obsession), and with a chic pair of loafers. Obviously, loafers have been everywhere this season, and I love them as an alternative to my much-abused ballet flats.
THREE // Date Night
Girly Ruffles & Heeled Booties
I think this would make a great outfit for a first date. The leather pants add just a hint of sexiness, while the ruffles of the sweater are sweet and girly. Block-heeled booties add some length to your legs without being too difficult to walk in.
Side note: can you picture this outfit with this beautiful vest? Wish I could justify buying this one, it’s so dreamy…maybe it’ll go on sale someday. And can you imagine how much your date would want to cuddle you wearing that?!
FOUR // Comfy and Casual
Sneakers & Supersoft Cashmere
This is my more stylish take on athleisure – if I wanted to look a little more put together (and not like I just stepped out of the gym) this is what I would wear for a Sunday of running errands.
Nothing could possibly be more soft and luxurious than cashmere (again, definitely encourages extra cuddles from your S.O. when you’re all covered in the softest fabric!). These basic cashmere sweaters are such a steal, especially if you can get them during a sale! They literally go with everything and nothing is quite as comfy.
Throwing on a snuggly down-filled vest helps you to stay warm and add a little more visual interest to an outfit. You can layer them under coats all winter too, so I think they’re a great investment (no pun intended).
I love my Superga sneakers for a comfy shoe that still looks cute and non-athletic; I wear them so much, and so does Kate Middleton, so obviously I’m all over them.
Leather leggings are really a much more versatile piece than you’d think, and they add such a nice hint of texture and interest to any outfit. Hopefully, you’ll never have to wonder what to wear with leather leggings again!
