There are a lot of items that I absolutely love to wear in the fall, but there are only a few items that I wear over and over again every single year. These are the essential items that I couldn’t live without at this time of year. I think that every single girl should own some variation of each of these items; although, obviously the items you choose will vary with your personal style. Each of these is either an exact item that I own and adore or something very similar. So, in no particular order, here are the top 10 fall wardrobe essentials that you absolutely need.
1 // Gingham Shirt
Layer this under your puffer vest or any sweater to add some pattern and color to your outfit. I have this exact shirt and it’s one of the single most worn pieces in my closet because it’s season-less and it can be layered with pretty much anything.
2 // White Shirt
A classic layering piece; put this under any sweater to look more polished and put together. I have one of the Ralph Lauren “custom fit” shirts, and it has the perfect amount of tailoring for a woman’s body without being too tight.
I have this exact jacket in navy, and it’s just the perfect weight for fall. It’s not too thick, so you won’t get too hot, but it’s waxed so it blocks wind and rain. I also love the polished look of a trench coat, but I’m still searching for the perfect one. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
4 // Jeans
Fall is the #1 time that you need a great pair of fitted denim. I prefer super skinny jeans that tuck easily into riding boots, and my favorites are from Loft (I also love Gap for jeans). I wear them almost every single day to the point where it’s kind of embarrassing.
5 // Nude ballet flats
These are my FAVORITE flats of all time. They are so freaking comfortable. There is absolutely no break-in time with these; they’re just the softest most buttery leather. They honestly feel like slippers, and they come in a million colors. I love nude flats for fall because they go with everything and they make your legs look so long and thin. (but I still want the leopard ones that I mentioned here)
6 // Brown Riding Boots
This is a picture of the exact boots that I’ve had for three years, and they’re still going strong. (They’re an older style, though, so the link is to a different pair that I love.) I don’t think I even need to say much here – riding boots are the most classic, basic fall shoe. You need them.
7 // Cable Knit Sweater
A classic basic that you can wear dressed up or down for almost any occasion. Layer your favorite collared shirt underneath or add a fun statement necklace to give it a bit more personality.
8 // Relaxed Sweater
A sweater that feels a bit more casual than a basic cable knit. Experiment with color, length, turtlenecks, side slits, etc. You’ll probably wear it every single day.
9 // Rain Boots
Fall is typically a pretty rainy time of year, and you don’t want to ruin those perfect nude flats. These are just a non-negotiable for me, and they’re even more useful in the snow. (This is a picture of the “refined” Hunter boots, but I have the original kind!)
10 // Puffer Vest
I never thought I would wear my puffer vest as much as I do. I’d recommend getting a basic color that will go with a lot; I have a red one and it’s not as versatile as I’d like it to be. The J. Crew excursion vests are super soft and warm because they’re filled with down. Dreamy.
Honorable Mentions: brown and black booties, faux fur vests, flannel shirts, colored jeans, corduroy pants, turtleneck tees, scarves
